Kitchen Design - Layouts

A well-designed kitchen starts with its layout, and selecting the right kitchen design layout is essential for creating a space that is both functional and stylish. On this page, we will explore kitchen layouts ideas and showcase the most popular ones, along with real examples of our kitchen layout transformations from our kitchen renovation projects.

Island Kitchen Layouts

The Island kitchen design, also known as the ‘Modern Layout,’ is hugely popular among homeowners who enjoy entertaining, renovators, and new home builders.

This layout features a kitchen island in the center, with cabinets and appliances along the walls. It offers dual access to the kitchen and provides extra counter and storage space, making it ideal for preparing and serving meals, as well as hosting social gatherings.

Brighton East Kitchen Renovation

For our Carr Street, Brighton East project, we transformed the old peninsula layout into a fresh open-plan island kitchen. The new island makes the space feel bigger and more modern, perfect for both everyday use and entertaining. With seating that looks out to the rear garden, it’s a great spot to gather, while also adding plenty of bench space and extra storage.

L – Shaped Kitchen Layouts

The L-Shape Kitchen is one of the most popular kitchen design layouts in kitchen renovations because it’s efficient and works well for small to medium-size spaces and open-plan kitchen designs. This layout features two adjacent walls of cabinets and appliances that form an L-shape, creating a natural work triangle between the sink, stove and fridge.

Brunswick Kitchen Renovation

In our De Carle Street, Brunswick apartment project, we redesigned a compact U-shaped kitchen into a smart L-shaped layout. This change opened up the space, creating a more practical work area with improved storage and a smoother workflow.

Peninsula Kitchen Layouts

The Peninsula kitchen layout is an excellent choice for smaller open-plan homes and apartments, creating a clear separation between the kitchen and living areas. This design combines a back wall and an island bench attached to a return, providing extra counter and storage space.

Caulfield South Kitchen Renovation

For our Laura Street kitchen renovation, we explored two layout options to improve functionality and storage. In the end, the original G-shaped peninsula layout was modernized, adding more bench space for cooking and preparation, plus smarter storage solutions — making it practical and comfortable for multiple people to cook together.

U-Shape Kitchen Layouts

U-shaped kitchens are ideal for larger spaces, with cabinetry and appliances arranged along three walls and one open entry. This layout offers plenty of bench space and storage, while allowing for smooth movement between work zones.

Though a classic design, modern touches and smart storage solutions can enhance the flow and make the most of corner cabinets. Where space allows, adding an island bench can create extra workspace and a social hub for family meals.

Two examples of this layout are our Grant St, Oakleigh and Cranham St, Caulfield projects. Both feature spacious U-shaped kitchens with central islands and a full wall of pantry appliances, providing ample storage to meet the owners’ needs.

Galley Kitchen Layouts

The Galley Kitchen arrangement has two parallel walls with a narrow aisle in between, ideal for small rectangular kitchen spaces. This layout is highly efficient in terms of workflow but may not provide an open and spacious feel.

Apart from being a practical choice for small kitchens, the galley layout is also a functional extension to open-plan kitchen designs for laundries and butler’s pantries.

To create an inviting atmosphere in a galley kitchen, it’s crucial to incorporate adequate lighting. Adding feature lighting to overhead units or LED lights along the kickboards can help brighten up the space and give it a modern touch.

Custom Kitchen Layouts

In some renovation projects, custom layouts are required to optimize odd-shaped kitchens or structural limitations. Consulting with a professional kitchen designer is crucial to evaluate the kitchen’s unique features and suggest creative design solutions.

Ripponlea Kitchen Renovation (Odd-Shape)

Our Erindale Ave, Ripponlea kitchen project posed a unique challenge with its irregular shape and angled load-bearing wall. We transformed the space into a bright, modern open-plan kitchen, complete with a casual breakfast bar – perfectly tailored to the owners’ lifestyle and needs.
